The 1 Scary Things I Did That Tripled My Income
One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned was that investing in myself is the most valuable investment you can make. My name is Sean I’m a mental health coach. I have a 98% satisfaction score from over 1,500 ratings and by the end of this you’re going to be jumping out of your seat wanting to invest in yourself.
I’m going to show you
How investing in yourself isn’t just some cheesy love yourself self help talk but actually very tactical.
How I invested in myself and the results of it
How my clients invested in themselves and what their results were.
So listen I know it sounds cheesy “just invest in yourself you’re a special beautiful diamond that just needs to be polished” but it’s actually very practical. Let me show you.
Let’s say that you take $1000 and invest it in the S&P 500. That has an average of a 10% return. So in a year you would have made an extra $100. Now let’s say that instead you take that $1,000 and invest it in a skill that can take your earning potential from $14/hr to $20/hr. Assuming a 40 hour work week all of a sudden you’re getting a $1,000 return from that investment in a MONTH. $12,000 in a year.
Now listen investing in yourself can be really scary. In a minute I’m going to talk about leaving my job and it was absolutely terrifying. And part of the reason that I was able to get through it was because I had a good support system. If you’d like to have someone in your corner helping you to take that scary step of investing in yourself schedule a free 50 minute session with me here.
Okay so how did I invest in myself? I was working a customer service job. I was there for 3 years and despite having amazing metrics and being praised for my work they weren’t promoting me. So I left and started investing in building my own business. And in 3 years I more than tripled my income. That’s a 200% return on my investment.
Now don’t get me wrong. Not every investment that you make is going to have these amazing astronomical returns. I invested about 10 years of my life into streaming and it’s not like I became some super successful streamer but there are so many different elements that I learned from streaming that helped to inform my business. I learned about how to make content. I learned about building a community and making people feel safe and understood. I learned how to make a newsletter. Heck the first few clients in my coaching business were people from my stream. So even if you invest in yourself and it’s a bit of a flop the knowledge is still worth the investment.
And I’m not some special fringe case. I see this with my clients all the time. Something like coaching is a HUGE investment in yourself. Let me give you a few examples.
Example 1: I’ve worked with people whose budgets were hundreds of dollars in the negative and just by looking at it and making some small shifts we brought it a few hundred dollars in the positive. That’s hundreds of extra dollars every month even after they stop paying for coaching.
Example 2: I’ve worked with people that were having a really hard time studying for their permit test and they were spending hundreds of dollars a month on food delivery and ubering to get where they needed to go. In 6 sessions they passed their permit test meaning that all that money goes back in their pocket.
Example 3: The most impactful example is I’ve worked with clients that were working a job where they were getting like $14/hr and through our work together they landed a job where they were making $24/hr. That’s about $1,600 extra dollars a month.
These are just the tangible examples. They don’t even begin to cover the intangible benefits that people get from investing in themselves like feeling more confident and how that can affect how you navigate your life. This confidence has helped my clients to feel empowered to negotiate their pay, ask for raises, and perform better in interviews.
And investing in yourself doesn’t have to be just money. You can invest with your time as well. So for instance, as I have built my business I have invested a lot of my time consuming a lot of business content to learn as much about business as I can which is hugely responsible for the returns I have seen from investing in myself.
So whether it’s time or money take some time to think about ways that you might be able to invest in yourself and if you want help brainstorming about that click here for a free 50 minute session with me.
With care and service,
Sean
